How to Choose a Preschool in San Jose: Parent Checklist

Children working together at a classroom table at a preschool in San Jose

Picking a preschool in San Jose comes down to a few things you can actually check. Not the brochure, and not the paint colour. Instead, look at what other parents say, the real staff ratio, and how the room feels at 5pm. Here is the checklist we hand to parents who ask.

The short answer

  • Start touring 9 to 12 months early, because fall places fill by spring.
  • California allows 1 adult per 4 infants, and 1 per 12 aged 2 to 6.
  • Read recent parent reviews, then judge the rooms with your own eyes.
  • Budget roughly $1,540 to $2,050 a month for full-time care.
  • Visit twice, once at drop-off and once late afternoon.

First, write down your three non-negotiables

Parents who tour five schools without doing this end up more confused. So decide what you need first, or you get sold on whichever school sells best.

Three questions settle it. What hours do you truly need in a bad week? Where does the school sit on your real commute at 8am? And what is your ceiling once you add fees and deposits?

Read the reviews before you pick a preschool in San Jose

Reviews are the closest thing you get to talking to forty other parents. So read thirty of them before you book anything.

However, read them properly. A perfect score from six reviews means little. Dozens of reviews over several years mean a lot. Also watch for the same teacher named again and again, because that signals staff who stay.

Ask about the ratio at 8am and at 5pm

Almost every school quotes a good ratio. So ask the honest follow-up. Is that the ratio at opening and closing too, or only mid-morning?

Many programmes combine rooms early and late, which is normal. Still, you should know whether your child spends the last ninety minutes in a mixed group of twenty.

Watch the teachers, not the posters

This is the most useful ten minutes of any tour. So ask if you can stand quietly at the side of a room.

Watch what happens right after something goes wrong. A spilled cup, or a snatched toy. Does an adult crouch down and talk it through? Also ask how long the lead teacher has stayed. Turnover is the signal nobody prints on a brochure.

Finally, compare your preschool in San Jose against free TK

This matters more than most parents realise. TK is now free for every child who turns four by September 1, staffed at an average of one adult per ten pupils.

But the calendar is the trade-off. TK runs on district hours and closes for school holidays. So if you both work full-time, you may still need afternoon cover. Many families pair TK with a private preschool in San Jose for the longer day. Decide that on purpose, rather than discovering it in July.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I start looking for a preschool in San Jose?

Most families start nine to twelve months early, because fall places go by the previous spring. So for a September start, begin touring in October. If that window has passed, call anyway.

What teacher-to-child ratio does California require?

The legal minimum allows one adult for every four infants. For ages two to six, it allows one adult per twelve. Remember, those are minimums and not targets.

How much should I trust online reviews?

Quite a lot, if there are enough of them. Look at volume and dates rather than the headline score. Then read how the school replies to a critical review, because that reply tells you how they handle problems.

How much does preschool cost in San Jose?

Published 2026 estimates put full-time centre care near $1,540 a month for preschool age. Toddler care runs about $1,800, and infant care about $2,050. Still, treat that as a market range only.

Is free TK better than a private preschool?

Sometimes, yes. TK is free for children who turn four by September 1. However, it follows school hours and closes for holidays. So many working families use both.

Bring the checklist. We will answer all of it.

Spring enrolment opens in January, so touring now puts you ahead of the rush.
