Deciding when a toddler is ready for preschool is one of the first big calls a parent makes. There is no single right age, and no two children arrive at readiness on the same day. What helps is knowing which signs actually matter.
1. They can be away from you for short stretches
Your child does not need to separate happily every time. What matters is that they can recover. If a goodbye at grandma’s house ends in tears but settles within a few minutes, that same pattern will usually repeat at school.
2. They show interest in other children
Watch what happens at the park. Children who are ready often hover near other kids, copy what they are doing, or hand over a toy. Parallel play counts. Full sharing comes later, and preschool is where it gets practised.
3. They can follow a simple two-step instruction
“Pick up your shoes and put them by the door.” If your child can hold two steps in their head and act on them, they can manage a classroom routine.
4. They have some stamina for a structured day
A preschool morning has a shape to it: circle time, activity, snack, outdoor play. Children who are ready can stay with an activity for ten minutes or so before moving on.
5. They are curious and ask questions
“What’s that?” and “Why?” are signs that a child is ready to be taught, not just cared for. Curiosity is the engine of early learning, and a good classroom feeds it every day.
What if your child isn’t there yet?
Readiness is not a test. Toilet training, long separations and confident sharing are all things children learn at preschool, not before it. A good program meets your child where they are and builds from there.
At Precious Moments Preschool we welcome children from 18 months across our San Jose, Sunnyvale and San Carlos campuses. The best way to judge readiness is to watch your child in the room. Come and see for yourself.
