7 Questions To Ask Before Selecting A Private Preschool

Selecting a private preschool can be stressful for parents. After all, you are entrusting the care of your precious little one to someone else, and often for a large portion of the day. While it’s crucial to find the right fit for your child, the following questions can help you evaluate each preschool that you visit.

1. What Is The Basic Philosophy?
There are many different types of preschools. Some preschools focus heavily on the academic aspect of school, while others focus more on socialization and play, while some strike a balance somewhere in the middle. At our private preschool, our child development model incorporates the theories of Piaget, Montessori, Erikson and other early childhood experts. Our focus is on creative learning, and we engage students with a STEAM-based curriculum that incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. We also provide our students with plenty of time for creative play, which we believe is essential for preschool-age children.

2. How Are Classes Structured?
At most private preschools, classes are structured by age. This makes it easier to meet the unique needs of young children and design thoughtful curriculum and activities. At our private preschool, we have classes for toddlers as young as two all the way up to a Pre-Kindergarten class for our young students that are about to transition into elementary school. The daily schedules and goals for each class differ based upon the age of the students. After all, we’d never expect a two-year-old to have the focus or motor skills of a 5-year-old, and we recommend that parents be wary of any preschool program that offers a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

3. Do You Provide Diapering & Potty Training?
At some private preschools, all students must be fully potty trained prior to admittance to the preschool. However, we believe that it is unrealistic to expect that all two-year-old’s (and even some 3-year-olds) will be fully potty trained before heading to preschool. Therefore, we do provide this service. Obviously, one of our goals is to foster independence in our students, and, as such, we will encourage students to become fully potty trained. Often, simply being around other children that are potty-trained will encourage a child to follow their fellow students’ example.

4. Do You Provide Meals?
At our private preschool, we are committed to providing students with healthy, balanced meals with fresh, organic ingredients. We thoughtfully design breakfast and lunch menus with nutritionally-dense foods that incorporate plenty of protein and dairy products to support growing bodies. Sample breakfast and lunch menus are available on our website, simply look under the Nutrition & Enriched Programs tab. We are a “peanut-free” zone, as so many children these days have life-threatening peanut allergies. If your child does have any other type of food allergy, please let us know as soon as possible.

5. What Are The Preschool Hours?
Many of our students have two full-time working parents in their homes, so we have tried to provide flexible hours that meet this need. Our preschool opens at 7:30 a.m. and we close promptly at 6 p.m. Most students arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 and pick-up times vary, although we do ask that all parents arrive no later than our 6 p.m. closing time as our teachers also need to head home to be with their families and recharge for another day of preschool.

6. Do You Provide Extracurricular Activities?
Some preschools provide activities beyond the typical daily curriculum, while others do not. At our private preschool, we believe it’s fun to mix things up a bit and, as such, we offer enrichment activities such as foreign language instruction, yoga classes, sports classes, piano lessons, Bollywood dance and our very popular Zumba class which includes parent participation. We also bring in some interesting guests, such as reptile show or perhaps a music program. Additionally, we have themed parties to celebrate various holidays and observances throughout the year.

7. Can I Take A Tour?
At our private preschool, we offer several Open Houses throughout the year, and parents can contact us for a tour, as well. Taking a tour is one of the best ways to get a feel for the school and determine whether or not your child will feel at home at our preschool. Our loving staff is committed to make each student feel welcome and safe during their preschool experience, and, because we know how much parents miss their children, we also provide camera access with a live feed. At any time, you can take a quick peek at what your child is doing, which can bring great peace of mind for parents.

If you have further questions or wish to schedule a tour of our private preschool, please give us a call at any time. We look forward to meeting you as well as your precious little ones.
